The X-System is a musical affect analysis application that selects songs from your personal music collection to influence your state of emotional arousal. Whether you want to remain calm in order to relax, or you need to keep motivated during your run, X-System's advanced mathematical algorithms help to select the appropriate soundtrack to your activities.

Business: MHN was approached by X-System to develop a proof of concept application that can sense and respond to the user's state of mind and body and stream appropriate music to achieve target states of excitement, relaxation, and concentration. Through the support of MHN's technical skills and business insight, X-System has developed into a promising product. It has received funding through a SMART:Scotland award and has resulted in a number of patents for its innovative technology.

Technology: As part of the initial development of the X-System, wireless pulse oximeters as well as MHN internally developed wireless real-time electro-dermal activity sensors were used to measure the physiological indicators of excitation levels while listening to music. The data were used to inform the development and later measure the accuracy of the analysis application. Further testing is currently underway to refine the music prediction component further.
