MedVu is a video application used for the purpose of testing the practical knowledge of bedside and general hospital procedures of medical students at the University of St. Andrews. Students can watch videos demonstrating medical procedures in booths that allow them to record parts of the video. The recordings go into a database and can be reviewed by them and fellow students who can then annotate them to point out good and bad practices.
Business: MHN was initially approached to take on the MedVu project due to a skills shortage issue. The client needed someone experienced with video encoding, streaming and web technologies, with the ability to rapidly deliver on the project objectives. Through its perseverance and flexibility, MHN was able to complete the project in time while responding to changing specifications, thus saving its client substantial financial losses.
Technology: The MedVu application uses the Red5 open source media streaming system in combination with a custom developed Java web application to display and playback videos with comments and notes for the use of St Andrews University's medical department in the education of medical students.
